Gio must go
The writing is on the wall for Giovanni Van Bronckhorst after his side produced another miserable display to add to the ever-growing collection of shocking performances under his reign. Rangers FC have looked like a team devoid of any ideas or direction for a few weeks now and a costly result in the league has been coming. Being held to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox by a ten-man Livingston is simply not good enough and has made the task of catching the league leaders even more difficult.
Having rested most first team starters for the cup tie during the week, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst fielded what could be considered his strongest team but for the absence of Connor Goldson due to injury. This made little impact as Rangers FC would have done well to get off to a poorer start. After just 4 minutes Livi's talisman Joel Nouble capitalised on a defensive shambles to sweep a low effort past McGregor and silence an already deflated crowd. The misery continued and many Rangers FC fans must have wondered whether they were having flashbacks to Wednesday nights game. A lack of creativity and drive led to a dull and frustrating game, which was almost a carbon copy of the second half vs Dundee, until a wild challenge from Morgan Boyes on Alfredo Morelos let Rangers FC off the hook. Originally given as a yellow card by the referee, a red card was brandished upon VAR review for a high and out of control tackle. Giovanni Van Bronckhorst proceeded to throw the kitchen sink at the remainder of the game, ending the match with 3 recognised strikers on the pitch. Constant pressure led to Lundstram volleying home a late leveller and the Scouser could have won his side an undeserved 3 points, with his last minute header going over the bar.
A combination of Boyes and Lundstram may have saved Giovanni Van Bronckhorst's job for now, but how long the Rangers FC board can bury their heads in the sand remains to be seen.
